Why have a smoothie everyday? Our journey to getting healthy was all about switching out things that we were eating with healthier versions. Learning how to make smoothies everyday was a huge part in our journey to weight loss. We think of our mango smoothie recipe as our weight loss smoothie. This tropical smoothie replaced the sugary yogurt and ice cream that we use to eat.
Tip #1 - Ya gotta get the right blender
You need a high speed blender to make great smoothies real fast. We are huge fans of the Vitamix blender. I know, I know they are very expensive I get it. But so worth it. We have had ours for 2 years now and use it everyday! If I had to pick just 2 electronic things to have in the kitchen it would be my Vitamix and my iPad.
Tip #2 - Find a store that you can buy big bags of frozen fruit from
For us having frozen fruit on hand all of the time is so important to making smoothies everyday! If we had to wash and peel fresh fruit for our smoothies each day it would be too much work. Frozen fruit saves sooo much time with smoothie making. We live in London Ontario Canada and Costco has been the best source that we have been able to find and most of it is organic.
Tip #3 - If you can't find it frozen prep it yourself
We put ginger in all of our smoothies. We have not been able to find frozen ginger so this is what we do...
- buy a large amount of ginger
- peel and cut all of the ginger
- rinse it off
- freeze on a baking sheet
- after about an hour we but in it a air tight container and throw it back in the freezer
- we prep about a months worth of ginger at a time
Tip #4 - Bananas, Bananas, Bananas
We have a bit of a banana system around here for our smoothies. When usually buy 2 bunches at a time. One bunch will be as ripe as we can get it and the other bunch will be not ripe at all, you know that green colour on the outside.
Tip #5 - Keep the fridge stocked with the liquid part of your smoothie
Right now for the liquid part of our smoothies we use either cashew milk or coconut water.
Tip #6 - Master a few recipes that you love
We have been making smoothies almost everyday for years. We have four go to smoothies that we have been making.
First we started with our mango smoothie. We got organized with our shopping so that we always have the ingredients on hand. We made just this tropical smoothie for a couple of months until we could make it blind folded.
Then we moved on to the blueberry smoothie and then the strawberry smoothie. Not really a big jump it was just a matter of starting with our mango smoothie and tweaking it a bit to include blueberries and strawberries.
It took us almost a year and a half to get to a point where we love green smoothies. I use to think yuk a green smoothie, how can you drink spinach! The trick was getting the flavours right to cover up the taste of the spinach. For us it was ginger that makes all the difference in the flavour, for you it might be some other flavour. Now this green smoothie is our favourite when ever we feel like we need a boost.
On New Years Eve as we enjoyed a brand new smoothie combo that threw together in 5 minutes, we realized wow its been 2 years of sticking to the same 4 smoothies, its time we get experimenting with new smoothie flavours. So this year we are going to try developing a new smoothie each month!
Cheers to you getting into a new smoothie habit!

Lee, a great habit to get into is to make your smoothie in the morning. A trigger could be as you are waiting for your tea water to boil or while you are waiting for your coffee to brew, throw your smoothie ingredients in your blender. Put your smoothie in a mason jar and store in the fridge until you are ready to drink it.
